Our Approach

We are all food teachers.

We want every child to grow up with a reverence for real food, taking pleasure in exploring, preparing, sharing, and devouring it.

So the Family Table Project has researched, compiled, and tested concrete strategies to promote positive food relationships. Our approach draws from Ellyn Satter’s seminal work on Eating Competence and Divisions of Responsibility, as well as the European model of Sensory Based Food Education, which is considered the international gold standard. Ours is a rich, joyful, and hands-on approach to food learning.

Great eaters are not born, they’re made. And great food relationships start sooner than you’d think. Children as young as four months old can discern diverse flavours, aromas, and textures. Discernment is the beginning of appreciation. That’s why we focus on the early years, harnessing children’s natural curiosity and their desire to explore the world with all five senses.

We work directly with parents and families, as well as in partnership with schools, camps, and child care centres.

We truly believe that a love of food is a love for life. We believe it can be modelled and it can be learned. And we know that, while some of us may be nutritional professionals, we are all food teachers.
